With nightfall, the Ancients built a fire from branches of blue heather, and the soft plumes of smoke perfumed the air with a comforting scent that lulled them to sleep. After a while, Bobres stirred awake and looked at the night sky. An enormous spiral of stars filled the darkness above, and the moon hung just above the horizon. The air felt crisp and clean. Thick moss had grown under him in the night, and he smiled at the comfort Voberen had provided. His hand touched someone’s hair, and he lifted his head from the ground to see who was next to him. Voberen. She shifted beside him, and he heard the pebbles clicking against each other in her palm. He rolled to his side and watched her sleeping, wondering what pain she bore. She, more than anyone, was accustomed to Governing great expanses, so he knew that her weariness came from something else. He tapped the pebbles in her hand lightly. Voberen jolted awake and clutched her fist shut. Then she used the same hand to wipe the sleep from her eyes. Leaning up on her elbows, she looked at him. He lay back next to her with his head on his hands, as she yawned into the ground.
“Little One?”
“Hmm.”
Keeping his eyes on the stars, he whispered, “What are the pebbles about?”
“You sent them to me.”
“I know, but why are you still holding them?”
She pulled her body closer, resting her head on his chest. With one hand, Bobres untangled the flowers she had woven into her hair. “What is troubling you, Voberen?” he asked softly. “Can you tell me? Is it the people in The Village?”
“If it were only them, I could bear it,” she said, a tear rolling down her nose and falling to his chest. She blotted it with her thumb and then spread her hand wide and ran it around his girth until she held his body tightly.
“What has happened?”
She lifted her head and looked at his face. Her finger traced the line of his brow to where it blended through the fan of lines into his cheekbone, and she sighed. He waited patiently, sifting her hair that shone like the moon behind it.
“Bobey…” Another tear fell. “I can feel your heir coming!”
